Corinthian Column Dedication

The Corinthian Column statue honoring the arrival of 65 Scots to Sarasota in 1885 was dedicated in a ceremony at the northwest corner of Main St. & Gulf Stream Ave in downtown Sarasota.

The event was sponsored by the City of Sarasota, the Caledonian Club of West Florida and the Sister Cities Association of Sarasota. The Caledonian Club is an alliance member of SCAS, deeply involved in supporting Sarasota's twinning with Sister Cities Dunfermline, Scotland.

Photos of the Meet and Greet Friday Dec 6 at Le Colonne

A fine time was had at the Meet and Greet.  Thanks to Gayle Maxey and Tom Halbert for setting up a great event. We had such a good time that we forgot to take photos inside - these photos were outside just before the event.

Our Sister Cities December Meet & Greet will be at the Le Colonne bar from 5-7pm on Friday, Dec. 6th.  Our event is timed to coincide with the "Holiday Night of Lights” at St. Armands Circle as the circle magically comes to light and life with grace and elegance. Happy hour drinks and small plates to provide substance before enjoying Sarasota’s holiday kick-off.

(January 1 - December 31 Billing Cycle)

Reminder:
2014 Membership Dues Invoices (January 1 - December 31 Billing Cycle)

Earlier this week Sister Cities International sent out invoices for 2014 membership dues to programs on our winter billing cycle (January 1 – December 31). Both the primary and billing contacts for your program (as listed in your online profile) were sent an email with a link to the invoice for your community. If you are the primary or billing contact for your sister city program and did not receive an invoice email, or if you believe there is a mistake with your invoice, then please contact our Aveen Karim, Membership Coordinator, at akarim@sister-cities.org.

The link in the invoice email allows you to print a copy of your invoice and gives you the option to pay your dues directly via PayPal.

Renewing your membership will ensure that you and your community can continue to receive Sister Cities International’s member benefits, including staff support, inclusion in our Member Directory and online directory, assistance finding new partners, access to toolkits, webinars, and templates, free visa consultations, travel and special event insurance, exclusive access to future grant opportunities, and more!

Dr. Fredric M. Somach, M.D.

Long time Sarasota Sister Cities member Dr. Fredric M. Somach, M.D, recently died in Atlanta after he and Roberta had just enjoyed a wonderful visit with their daughter, her three-year-old and and two new babies. An obituary about Dr. Somach will be published shortly.

Their older son Steve was there at the time and Bill drove up from Florida and arrived that night.  Roberta said that “Thankfully, the surviving family spent several more days there all together with happy memories to keep us thankful.” Family service/memorial events here this winter and in Manhattan in the spring where his sister and her whole family live.

In providing this initial notice Roberta added “We are grateful for the friendship with our Sister City friends who certainly lightened our lives.  Will never forget the Dunfermline string band in our living room and the piper walking the beach!” Dr. Somach was a neurosurgeon.  He and Roberta have long resided on Casey Key Road, Nokomis, FL.
