Sarasota Sister Cities Wins Prestigious Award

It is with great pride that I inform you that the Sister Cities Association of Sarasota, Inc. has been notified by Sister Cities International that we are the winners of the 2014 Innovation: Energy/Sustainable Development (Population Less than 100,000) award. The award will be presented at the Sister Cities International 58th Annual Conference in San Jose, California on August 2, 2014.

For those of you who did not have the opportunity to attend the conference, we partnered with the Sarasota Chamber and University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee for an International Conference with 300 attendees. One hundred students from five high schools and four colleges attended. We had university presentations from six of our eight sister cities as well as seven Florida universities. In April our visit to the “sustainable business” in Tel Mond was arranged by the Professor that made a presentation at the Conference—an example of how relationships build. Also presenting were the National Oceanographic & Atmospheric Agency and US Department of Agriculture, as well as, Mote Marine. Finally, we had oral and poster sessions for students. Pictures and further information is on
sustainablesarasota.us.

While this is an honor for all of our organization and those members who assisted with the conference, I would especially thank Ray Young and his committee for an outstanding conference. His committee is as follows: Raymond Young, Ph.D., Chair, Harry Dunn, Gloria Grenier, Dave Harralson, Ph.D., John Buechler, Ph.D., Erin Martin, Ph.D., Andrew Ezzell, John Thomas Halbert, and Werner Knoop. Craig Hullinger was responsible for the blog and other social media while Bill Wallace did fund raising. Finally, Jane Rose, Ph.D., obtained our venue at University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. Again, congratulations to Ray, his committee and all those who participated in the conference.
