INFO @ SARASOTA SISTER CITIES May 15, 2016 (8)

This issue of INFO is more a “mark your calendars” issue than hard news.  Like Lily Tomlin, moisten your pencil with the tip of your tongut so it’ll write real dark--and get ready to fill in your calendar.

Modern Pentathlon & Irene Morningstar
Kudos, kudos, and kudos—I love those candy bars--to Irene Morningstar, Vice President for Sports, for her work in the just concluded successful Modern Pentathlon.  Many Sister Cities members volunteered.  Athletes from all over the world competed, and all who volunteered made Sarasota look good.  Great Job!

Good People
Dear Members, Sister Cities is always looking for good people—not ole soreheads—to help make our organization better.  Bring someone with you to the next Sister City event you attend.  We are too good not to share.

The Sister City/Florida Studio Theater Write-A Play Contest:

          BAD  NEWS

The students and chaperones from Tel Mond and Dunfermline will arrive this coming week for a week full of activities planned by Gloria Grenier, Vice President of Arts & Culture, but we recently received bad news from Tatyana Chebotar in Vladimir.  I quote her letter to Sister Cities in full because it pulls on our heartstrings.

  Dear Sarasota Sister City Members:

I am sorry that I cannot come to your "WRITE A PLAY!" festival. My mother lost her job, we didn't expect that it could happen and now we will need money for our family while she is looking for work. We cannot afford to spend money on my tickets, I am very thankful for your attention, I am sorry that all that you organized for me and my teacher is not necessary now, I am very very sorry. I wish your festival great success. My dream didn't come true but I had such a wonderful time when I was preparing for the trip, so many expectations, that I am still very happy that I am the winner of your project.

With best wishes,

Tatyana

What a well-mannered, conscientious young lady to write us such a letter--when I’m sure she was upset due to the disappointment of not being able to come to see her work performed.  We will miss you, Tatyana!

The Mosaic to Commemorate our Relationship with Mérida in Bayfront Park
On December 10, 2010—some six years ago—Englewood Elementary students with their art teacher, Dawn Hinck, and with the help of Luis Manuel May Ku, Mayan artist from Mérida, Mexico, presented the City with a mosaic signifying the friendship between Sarasota and Mérida.
We learned a few weeks ago that the mosaic in Bayfront Park was deteriorating and we immediately looked into having it restored.  Afer being examined, it turns out that the mosaic has deteriorated to the point where it cannot be repaired.  We are now investigating whether to have it rebuilt, change the medium but keep the same them, or –generally—what to do with it.  Stay tuned…….

Dat’s All, Folks!

Social Networking Report May 2016

Google has provided us a domain email for free since we are a non profit.  We will create an email address for Board Members on request.

The address will be your title or name, followed by @sarasotasistercities.com. The system is similar to gmail. It also provides a way to share documents and photographs. It is a little confusing at first.

Using the domain email is of course voluntary.  If you do use the email it might make it simpler to use it with a separate web browser - perhaps use the Microsoft browser for your regular email and use Chrome or Firefox for your Sister City email. That way you won't have to log in and out of the two email systems. Or you can choose to forward the Sister City email to your regular account.

A few of the new emails have started in the Estonian!! language. We don't know why. Great for internationalism but not so good for comprehension. If this happens give me a call at 309 634 5557 and I will help you get it back to English. This link explains how to change the language support.google.com/mail/answer/17091?hl=en  I will be in the Sister Cities office one hour before our Board meeting if you have questions about using the new domain email system, or any of our communications systems.

We email our members several times each month with notices of events. We publish our schedules, info and photos on our Newsletter Blog click:
sarasotasistercities.com

You can post information and photos and interact with others on the addresses below. All of our members and friends are encouraged to join us. These systems work best if we have a number of our members posting.

We continue our efforts with our Facebook page. If you use Facebook please check out our page, and contribute thoughts, ideas, and events.
facebook.com/SarasotaSisterCities

If you use Twitter please join us. It is easy to create an account and post directly yourself. And prove to everyone that you are up to date.
twitter.com/SarasotaSisterC

We also continue our efforts on LinkedIn and Pinterest.

LinkedIn linkedin.com/in/sarasotasistercities

Pinterest
pinterest.com/sarasotasister

And of course our Web Site. We use a consultant to update the site, and we change it infrequently. It does pick up info from the blog automatically and has links to our social media.
sarasotasistercities.org

In addition I will also use craighullinger@sarasotasistercities.com

We have many photos on line. You can see them on our Pinterest page or see them from the left column of the blog. Or

If any of you would like to help improve our social marketing systems give me a call or send me an email or just jump in and start posting to our Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, or Twitter addresses. And if you know anyone who can help with this effort please put me in contact with me.

I continue to post news releases with little success. It is easy to write a news release on the Tampa Bay News Wire and theoretically the papers will pick this up. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

All the news that’s fit to print……at the end of the Sarasota’s season………

OUR NEW PRESIDENT, MARIANNA JANZ-WECKE
At our April Annual Meeting, President Marianna Janz-Wecke was installed.  She comes to Sarasota from the Hannover, Germany, area.  After working for various large businesses there, she came to the US, where she has worked in real estate.  She is employed by Harry E. Robbins associates, where she holds a specialization in international real estate.  We look forward to your leadership, Marianna!

WHAT IS THE “CORRECT” NAME FOR SISTER CITIES???

Over the years, members have called our organization by various names.  But here are the two—and only two—correct names:

--Sister City Association of Sarasota, Inc.  (SCAS) is our official name for tax purposes, official documents, legal documents, and so on.   But the name is a mouthful and can be cumbersome in publications and graphics where brevity is a virtue.  This led us to a dba….

--Sarasota Sister Cities is our dba—our “doing business as” name.  It’s three words instead of five.  Easy, quick, concise.  Graphically better to work with.

Two names and one acronym.  All the new name badges and other material will gradually be changed to reflect the correct usage.  That’s it!

FLORIDA STUDIO THEATER/SCAS WRITE-A-PLAY WINNERS

The 2016 international winners of the Write-A-Play contest are………
Naom Drori from Tel Mond, Israel, “Living Together”
Tatyanna Chevotar from Vladimir, Russia, “Part of My Soul”
Gregor Morgan & Hamish Wood from Dunfermline, Scotland, “Lost in London”

The students are working on getting passports and visas and making travel plans,  and all hope to be here for the May 18-23 Playwright’s Festival.  Over the years, over 50,000 plays have been submitted in this contest.  Gloria Grenier is planning this year’s FST/SCAS Play Festival week.

KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN for the NEW SCAS BROCHURES

The writing, editing, and graphic work have been created—or borrowed from previous brochures—and the new brochure is now being printed.  It is a bright, four-color trifold brochure.  It will be placed it in conspicuous locations all over town to publicize the good work we do and to point out opportunities for membership .  Editors: Dave Harralson, Chair, Gloria Grenier, Craig Hullinger, and Ray Young.  Keep your eyes peeled for it!

THE SARASOTA CHRISTIAN SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL April 21, 2016

Coordinated by Ray Young, Vice President for Education, Sister Cities was a participant in this school’s international festival.  We had three tables at the festival:  a general information table about Sarasota Sister Cities.  A Sister Cities United Youth table coordinated by Morgan Bortz, our CYD Board member, which explained our high-school students’ efforts to connect teens from our sister cities to those here in Sarasota.  As our Vice President of Sports, Irene Morningstar displayed information on the Modern Pentathelon and how people could volunteer to serve for it.

THE CITY DIRECTOR FOR OUR NEW FRIENDSHIP CITY, RAPPERSWIL-JONA, SWITZERLAND   (RJ)

At the April Board Meeting, Nelly Camardo was installed as the City Director for Rapperswil-Jona on the north shore of Lake Zurich.  Charlotte Hull is the Assistant City Director.  As we get to know our Swiss city this year, we look forward to the efforts of Nelly and Charlotte.  Welcome!

And…..RJ volleyballers are planning to come here for a week’s stay in June and play beach volleyvall with local teams.  We’ll report more and we know more.

By the way, the “w” in Rapperswil is pronounced as a “v.”  The “j” in Jona is pronounced as a “y.”

Thanks for reading!
