The Giving Challenge



Sarasota Sister Cities will participate in the Giving Challenge, which is a one-day, 24-hour effort by Sarasota area non-profits to raise funds. The Patterson Foundation will match donations dollar for dollar with a minimum $25 donation up to $250 per person.

The 24-hour period starts Sept 1, 2015, at 12:00 noon and ends on Sept 2 at 12:00 noon. Gifts must be made by credit card through a web site during that period.  We will provide more details as we get closer to the event.

We will go to our membership asking for gifts. William Wallace recommends that each of our 18 board members consider a gift of $100 which, when matched, would result in $3,600 in new new funds; then if each of our remaining 80-plus members each contributed $25 (the minimum accepted), when matched, would result in an additional $4,000.

Further, if each of our board members will accept a challenge from President Beth Ruyle to solicit 10 of their friends for a minimum gift of $25, it could boost total giving to SCAS over $10,000, all given in that one day!

This is a one time event each year and SCAS is only eligible for this 100% match in 2015 because it is our first year to enter the Giving Challenge. Gloria Grenier noted that other organizations blast you with emails before the event. That is very important. We will email everyone with the details and may ask many to make individual contacts.

William Daniel Rosenbluth - Rest in Peace


We are very sorry to inform you that Linda & Bob's Rosenbluth's son died July 16, 2015.  Linda is the former President and current Tel Mond City Director.  Below is the obituary.

Dan Rosenbluth, 45, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2015, after a brief illness. Dan was born in Victorville, California on August 26, 1969. He is a graduate of Tulane University and the University Of Tennessee Haslam School Of Business. He is survived by his wife Monica, his two daughters Lucy and Natalie, his parents Linda and Robert Rosenbluth, his brother NathanRosenbluth and his dog Maizy. Dan was a marketing professional and a co-owner of Savannah Bourbon Co. Those who knew Dan were drawn to his zest for life and his unparalleled ability to make things happen. Dan and his family enjoyed bike rides, camping trips, and traveling the world. His kind and gentle soul will be missed by his family and friends from around the globe. 

Memorial Service, Sunday, 10:00AM, Temple Emanuel, 51 Grape Street; a catered reception will immediately follow the service at the Temple. In lieu of flowers, Dan's family has requested that contributions be made to a scholarship fund that has been set up in Dan's memory through the Latin American Educational Foundation at www.laef.org. - Published in DenverPost.com on July 19, 2015

Youth For Understanding Intercultural Exchange Program

Good Evening,

 I am reaching out to your today, as the Florida Field Director with Youth For Understanding (www.yfuusa.org) we are a nonprofit Intercultural Exchange Program. Sarasota County has always warmly welcomed our students and made them feel part of the community, giving them a second home. I noticed that we have several students come from Your Sister Cities Countries and wanted to know who might be able to share information about hosting one of these amazing young men or women during the 2015-2016 school year. 

 I would be very pleased if you would share our information or perhaps tell me who I might reach that can share for us. Hosting an exchange student is a life changing experience for the student, family and community.

Sarasota Sister Cities Wins Prestigious International Award Two Years in a Row

It is with great pride that I inform you that the Sister Cities Association of Sarasota, Inc. has been notified by Sister Cities International that they are the winners of the 2015 Innovation Award: Arts and Culture (Population Less than 100,000). The award will be presented at the Sister Cities International 59th Annual Conference in Minneapolis on July 18. This award follows the receipt of the 2014 Innovation Award: Energy/  Sustainability (Population Less than 100,000).


This award recognized the ongoing Sarasota Sister Cities Program that integrates with the Florida Studio Theater's Young Playwrights Award and with students and teachers from Sarasota's Sister Cities. Florida Studio Theater trained teachers in instructing students in play writing in Dunfermline, Scotland; Tel Mond, Israel; and Vladimir. In turn, these students now submit plays to the Young Playwrights Competition.


These students have been regular winners and honorable mention recipients. For example, two Vladimir students and one Tel Mond student won this 2015. Likewise, in 2014 two Dunfermline students, one Tel Mond, and one Vladimir student won the contest. Sister Cities then hosts these students allowing them to see their plays professionally performed at Florida Studio Theater.
Students are also given an introduction to the City. This year they met with Mayor Willy Shaw and visited a variety of Sarasota institutions.


While this is an honor for all of the organization, those Sister Cities members who assisted with the program through the years deserve special credit. These include Linda Rosenbluth, City Director, Tel Mond, Israel; Pauline Mitchell, City Director, Dunfermline, Scotland; and Yulyiya Gaukhman, City Director, Vladimir; their committees;and Ron Gossett, Vice President Arts and Culture.


Recognition should also be given to Kate Alexander Associate Director of FST, who initiated program with SC in 2001 and Adam Ratner, Young Playwrights Festival Coordinator/Lead Teaching Artist.


Antiques Road Show










Our friends Dave Dorgan and Dan Dubriel came to the Antiques Road Show at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota.  He brought with him Native American artifacts that he had purchased at auction for $67.00.  Not bad.

We had looked at the objects and thought they were two perfect.  And they were perfect.

Dave also brought some Roman lamp molds that he had been given in Tunisia while he was in the Peace Corps. Also valuable.

Dan took over a large Thai tapestry that we owned that we paid $20 for. They estimated it was worth $200 to $300.
