We celebrate the Province of Treviso, cradle of ancient communities.  During the period of the Venetian Republic, this area was known for its pleasant resorts and bountiful agricultural products.  Local waterways give Treviso the name of Watertown in the midst of picturesque landscapes and rolling hills.

Treviso has a long tradition of Carnevale festivities in the month of February, its origin being in the ancient Roman Saturnalia.  It offered the public a time of entertainment and festivities.  Its dominant feature was the masquerade, serving as a brief freedom from the confines of social class, gender, and religion.

Festivale de Carnivale is sure to be a memorable and marvelous evening of libation, conviviality, and community. Please join us! GET YOUR RESERVATIONS IN NOW!

For questions, please contact Treviso City Director, Anna Madaschi at cd-treviso@sarasotasistercities.com.

RESERVATIONS BY THE SPECIFIED DATE REQUIRED:

A good number of people reserved for the Xiamen luncheon after the deadline—or they just showed up without reservations.  The Bird Key Yacht Club ran out of menu items and had to serve items that people did not order.  The management was concerned about the inability to properly prepare for the event.

If this trend continues, we anticipate possibly having to refuse those who attempt to register late or just show up at the event.  We, of course, DO NOT want this to  happen.

Please be thoughtful and help us with this problem by registering on time for future meetings.

CELEBRATION OF THE 10TH-YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH XIAMEN:

On January 11 at the Bird Key Yacht Club, nearly 100 enthusiastic attendees celebrated Sarasota Sister Cities’ ten-year relationship with XiamenDr. Carolyn Bloomer, City Director for Xiamen and former visiting professor at Xiamen University, shared memories of the 2007 delegation trip to Xiamen.  Then Mayor Lou Ann Palmer was part of that delegation and remembered at the beginning of that trip the two delegations were bowing to each other, and at the end they were hugging, a reference to the fact that at that time, Chinese traditionally did not hug or touch in this way.

Dr. Bloomer along with her Assistant City Director, Dr Hongying Liu and Jian Le Volk entertained people with the detailed and fascinating history between Sarasota and Xiamen.

Thanks, Carolyn, Hongying, and Jian Li!

THE CRYSTAL BALL—THE PEOPLE’S GALA—AT SELBY LIBRARY:

Thanks to our member Kenney DeCamp, who served as the event’s MC and johannes factotum,  Selby Library had another hugely-successful Crystal Ball.  Sarabeth Kalajian,  head of Sarasota County Libraries told your editor that Kenney never disappoints, that his Crystal Balls are always wonderful events!

Downstairs served as a large entertainment space with a variety of singers, dancers & entertainers. A variety of Sarasota’s best restaurants offered delicious small snacks:  chicken meatballs stuffed with mozzarella, barbecue, ravioli, orzo salads, unusually-flavored humus, meatball sandwiches, and other savories too numerous to mention.  Bars abounded throughout the library.

Throughout the library, booths represented your Sarasota Sister Cities,  authors, spas, candy makers,  aromatherapy, literacy services, writing instruction, major community organizations such as The Ringling Museum, and many other groups.

Among those Sister City members in attendance (in alphabetical order and with apologies to those your editor can’t remember now) were Marianna Janz-Wecke  Eladio & Judy Amores, Susan Atwell, Gloria Grenier, Maria des Neiges Grossas, Dave Harralson,  Charlotte Hull, Sylva Kanderal, Brianna & Werner Knoop, Anna Madaschi, Elke & Troy Scott, Rodolfo Sperandeo, and others.
          Whatta Party!  Thanks Kenney!

SICK BAY

Gail Sanderson, our luncheon coordinator, is in sick bay at Hawthorne Village after a hip replacement.  Send some thoughts and prayers her way for a speedy recovery.

We miss you while you’re out, Gail!  Speedy Recovery!

New Year 2017 Article in the Herald Tribune

Dear SCAS Board Members,

I want to wish you and your families all the very best for the New Year in 2017.

We started the year with our first 2017 Luncheon on January 10th, 2017, Celebrating the 10th Year of Sister City Relationship with Xiamen, China.
Thanks to everybody who helped to make this event a very successful one.

Article from the Herald Tribune January 11th, 2017:

Wish you a Very Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year

Dear Members and Friends
of the Sister City Association of Sarasota,

"When President Eisenhower proposed the establishment of a program of affiliation between American and foreign cities on September 11, 1956, no one could have anticipated how successful it would become in creating imaginative and valuable exchanges in the fields of education, culture, youth, business, local government and professional expertise.

All who have given of their time and talent in this effort can take great satisfaction from their accomplishments.”
-This was a statement by President Gerald Ford, when he took office in 1974.

This is and will continue to be true in our future and
I would like to thank:

The City of Sarasota
and all of our members and friends
for the steady support they have given us,
their belief in the work of the SCAS,
and most importantly,
our accomplishments of this past year.

2016 was a very exciting year for this Organization,
however we cannot let this be the end of our accomplishments.

I encourage you to get involved in our Association.
I encourage you to invite others to get involved in our Association.
A tap on the shoulder can often go a long way.

Everyone has something unique to offer that can be a great help.

After all, our mission isn’t to only accept those that are the same as us,
But to accept that we are  all  different.

Let us all work together to make 2017 our most successful year yet.

I wish you all and your families and friends
a Very Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year in 2017.

As seasonal residents and visitors return to Sarasota, they'll probably notice some of the new developments underway in downtown and the Rosemary District.  Located at the corner of N. Palm Ave. and Cocoanut Ave., this construction project will be a hotel, called Hotel Sarasota.  The project includes a new roundabout at the intersection which is now open to traffic.  The construction boom is continuing so please be vigilant while traveling around town and be on the look out for construction crews and possible shifts in traffic patterns.

This Week's Items to Know:

1.
MLK Day - Jan. 16  Administrative offices will be closed next Monday, January 16 as the nation remembers Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Garbage, recycling and yard waste will be picked up as usual -- no changes.  All City of Sarasota recreational facilities will be open with regular business hours.

To celebrate the life, dreams and achievements of Dr. King, a variety of events and activities will be held, including a golf tournament at Bobby Jones Golf Club, memorial breakfast, and a "Stride Toward Freedom" unity walk and celebration.  The walk starts at 11 a.m. on MLK Day at Robert L. Taylor Community Complex and will conclude at Dr. MLK, Jr. Park where a celebration with live music, vendors and speakers will take place.  To see a complete list of community events click here.

Sarasota continues to make strides with diversity and equality, as is being documented now with recorded oral histories by Vickie Oldham and the Newtown Conservation Historic District.  We're honoring the community's past while, like Dr. King, contemplating dreams and opportunities.  The new SMH teaching clinic will open soon and so will the Ringling soundstage, presenting more opportunities for small businesses to open and grow along the newly renovated Dr. MLK, Jr. Way.

2.
Bobby Jones Golf Club - Public Input Wanted   We're inviting the community to participate in walk-throughs of all 45 holes of the three
Bobby Jones
The British Course at Bobby Jones.
golf courses comprising the Bobby Jones Golf Club Complex.
A golf course architecture firm, Richard Mandell Golf Architecture, is spearheading the master planning process for the complex and principal Richard Mandell will be in Sarasota to assess the course alongside the public.

He's seeking specific input from regular golfers at Bobby Jones, so he can begin creating a master plan design based on community needs, suggestions, and concerns. To read a letter of introduction click here.

The course walk-through schedule is:
  • Wed., January 25 - Noon:  Gillespie Course
  • Wed., January 25 - 2:30 p.m.:  American Course
  • Thurs., January 26 - 6:45 a.m. - American Course
  • Thurs., January 26 - 2:30 p.m. - British Course
  • Fri., January 27 - 6:45 a.m. - British Course
  • Fri., January 27 - 2:30 p.m. - American Course
You're encouraged to register in advance for each walk-through, so we have an idea of how many to anticipate on the course.  Please call 941-954-4163 to register or sign up at the Golf Shop.

3.
Garbage/Recycling - Info  There's a new feature on the City of Sarasota website to help you determine your garbage collection day, receive a reminder about collection days, and glean recycling tips.

On the homepage, from the list of Departments, select Public Works, then click 'Garbage Pickup & Recycling'.  Enter your address in the space provided.  A calendar will appear showing your collection day. You can also register to receive regular reminders via email, text or phone call.  In addition, there's an option to receive alerts, to notify you about a collection delay (possibly due to weather), if necessary.

A screen shot of the new 'Recollect' interactive software
on the City of Sarasota website.
In the 'Be Cart Smart' area, you can type the name of any item and receive an immediate response on how to recycle or properly dispose of it.  For example, if you enter 'plastic bottle', you'll be informed to place it in your recycling bin for curbside pickup -- and you'll also receive special instructions for handling the plastic cap.

Thanks to Public Works General Manager Todd Kucharski for seeing the need for this interactive software and assuring it was implemented online for the community.

Questions about the new software and solid waste pickup?  Please call 941-365-7651.  For recycling, contact Waste Management:  941-753-7591.

4.
Employee Recognition    When City employees go above and beyond we like to pause a moment and recognize their efforts.  This

and Bill Mallett.

week, we honored several employees who were tasked with renovating an outdated conference room in the City Commission office and equipping it with modern day technology -- all within a
very short time frame during the holiday season.

Kudos to Facility/Asset Manager Rob Schanley, Facilities Manager Eric Patro and Webmaster Bill Mallett who worked some late nights to get the job done on time. The room's extreme makeover is a significant improvement and the space is now functional for staff meetings requiring video/computer presentations and conference calls.  Congratulations, team!

5.
Happy 100th!  Our most seasoned regular golfer at Bobby Jones Golf Club, Larkin Lyell, is set to turn 100 years young in a couple of weeks!  What's especially impressive...he golfs every Wednesday with the Men's Golf Association.  Earlier this week, Larkin's golf buddies honored

him with an early birthday celebration before they hit the links for their regular round of 18.

Larkin served in the U.S. Air Force during WW II.  In 1976, he and his wife moved to Sarasota from Tenessee and raised four children.  Over the years, he managed motels in Sarasota and worked at Walgreen's well into his 90s.

A City of Sarasota resident, Larkin has enjoyed playing at Bobby Jones for many years and says he looks forward to his weekly round with the guys (and he usually shoots under his age).  His secret to such youthful exuberance?  He jokes that he's always enjoyed a lot of Blue Bell ice cream (vanilla).
Happy Birthday, Larkin....best wishes!
