Thanksgiving Holiday - City Hall Closed Thurs. & Fri. Believe it or not, Thanksgiving is next week! City Hall will be closed on Thurs. November 24 and Fri., November 25 for the holiday.
Please note: Garbage, recycling and yard waste collection will be delayed one day:
* Regular Thursday collection will be on Fri., November 25
* Regular Friday collection will be on Sat., November 26
Bobby Jones Golf Club will host the 8th Annual 'Turkey Shoot' on Thanksgiving Day with a special 8:45 a.m. shotgun offer: $23 for 18 holes riding plus a discounted breakfast buffet at the on-site restaurant, Libby's Greenseide. As our staff members at Bobby Jones like to say, "Don't be a turkey, join the fun!"
Lido Pool will be open regular hours both days.
Robert L. Taylor Community Complex will be closed on Thanksgiving and open Friday 6 a.m. - 10 a.m.
A special thank you to our dedicated City employees -- including many in SPD, Utilities and Parks & Rec -- who will be working on the holiday to ensure the community is safe and City operations continue.
We hope you and yours have an enjoyable holiday weekend!

Garbage Schedules - New Software Coming The Public Works Department soon will unveil a new tool to help remind you about solid waste, recycling and yard waste collection dates.
Called ReCollect, the software will allow residents to view a calendar showing the collection dates at their specific address. There's also an option to sign up for weekly reminders. Throughout the year, collection days change a handful of times due to holidays. So, this could be a helpful tool to be reminded about any changes. Residents will have the option to receive those reminders via text message, email or phone call.
Also, an interactive section called "Be Cart Smart" allows residents to learn which items can be recycled and where hazardous waste drop-off sites are located.
|
A sneak peek of what the calendar will look like -- tailored to your specific address.
|
In addition, the Public Works Department will be able to share messages about recycling events, recycling education and other information related to solid waste.
Several cities in Florida already are using the software, including St. Pete.
We look forward to launching it next month via the City of Sarasota homepage. We'll keep you posted.

Sarasota School of Architecture - Bay Plaza Earlier this week, the community paid tribute to the Sarasota School of Architecture with visits from renowned architects Victor Lundy and Tim Seibert. Mr. Seibert was the special guest of residents at Bay Plaza -- one of his

signature designs.
Mr. Seibert and Harold Bubil, a writer with the Herald-Tribune, discussed the history of Bay Plaza and the profound impact well done architecture can have on a community. We certainly can see many positive examples in our special community which have improved the environment.
Thanks to the Sarasota Architectural Foundation and Janet Minker for coordinating the SarasotaMOD Weekend, including the Bay Plaza discussion and the Victor Lundy tribute. All these engaging events were helpful reminders about Sarasota's notable status in the realm of world class architecture.

Periscope - Featured Broadcast We entered a whole new sphere on social media last week when our live Periscope feed of the Veterans Day parade was a featured broadcast on Periscope. That
|

means Periscope recommended it be watched by its 2 million active daily users.
Over 26,000 viewers around the world tuned in live on their smart phones, tablets and computers to watch the parade. Another 2,000 viewers watched the recorded version later in the day. That's a total of 28,000 viewers -- a phenomenal reach. And, it was accomplished just using a cell phone, tripod and the Periscope app.
|
Using hashtags and keywords, the scope was noticed and promoted by Periscope as a featured broadcast.
|
The live broadcast highlighted Sarasota's community spirit, unity and patriotism. And, being a featured global scope was a particular honor for our local military veterans on their special day.
In this new technology age, Periscope is another excellent tool to have in our communications toolbox, especially during an emergency when we, as a government organization, need to convey important information.
If you're interested in learning more, download the Periscope app on your smart phone or tablet -- it's free. Our handle is @CityofSarasota. Also, look for the Sarasota Police Department - @SarasotaPD.
