YOUNG BAGPIPER COMES FROM SCOTLAND this week
During Pauline Mitchell’s recent trip to Scotland that took over a dozen Sister Citiers, they met Daniel Ferry and his mother, Shonagh, as Daniel played the bagpipes. Dr. Fred Bloomhad a “shazam” moment and thought “we’ve got to get this lad to Sarasota to play with the Riverside High School Kilties.” Soon Ray Young is involving Sister Cities in Fred’s idea—and Daniel will soon be here. Thanks for everything, Fred.
Daniel is a senior in high school, interested in music and drama. He will be spending a day at Booker High School and Sarasota Christian School, seeing what students do here. He will then be practicing with the RHS Kiltie Band in preparation for a performance there.
LET’S HAVE A BIG TURNOUT to support Fred, Ray, and Pauline—and our new friend, Daniel Ferry. (see details in CALENDAR above)
CULTURAL REVOLUTIONS: A REVIEW OF CHINESE CONTEMORARY ART SINCE THE COMMUNIST REVOLUTION
On November 10, a large crowd turned out to hear Kirk Ke Wang, Shanghai native and professor of visual arts at Eckerd College in the new Center for Asian Arts at the Ringling Museum of Art. And SCAS had many members there.
The event was co-sponsored by Sarasota Sister Cities, the USF Confucius Institute, the Gulf Coast Chinese Association, and the US-China Peoples’ Friendship Association.
Prof. Wang’s talk took us on a tour of Chinese art from the communist revolution to the present. The paintings he showed provided vivid examples of this evolution. Especially interesting were photos of Prof. Wang with contemporary Chinese artists.

EXPRESSIVE COMPOSITIONS IN OIL WITH JOVE WANG
Jian Li is a new resident in the Sarasota area and attended Sister Cities’ September luncheon. She is energetic, enthusiastic, and full of creative ideas. She is now managing an art exhibition in this area by a well-known Chinese artist, Jove Wang, currently living in California. Although Jian Li (or Li Volk, her married name) is not yet a member of Sister Cities and this is not an official SCAS activity, let’s help her promote this effort.
Jove Wang has exhibited in many galleries around the world. Having travelled all of China, he paints scenes of indigenous Chinese cultures—and he has also painted Sarasota scenes.
Jove Wang was invited to the most prestigious art institute of China in 1884, The Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts and later went to the Tokyo Academy if Fine Arts. In 1990 he immigrated to the US where he quickly met with international success.

SARASOTA-MANATEE CHAMBER EXPO
Each year the Chamber presents this Expo where local businesses and organizations highlight what they do. Each year it attracts approximately 1,000 visitors. This year, Marianna Janz-Wecke, Beth Ruyle-Hullinger, Charlotte Hull, Craig Hulliinger, Kenney DeCamp, and Dave Harralson manned (peopled) our attractive booth.
We talked to many people about Sister Cities and passed out LOTS of brochures. We hope we represented you well.
